Getting Back to Your Active Lifestyle

A fracture is a crack in the bone of your foot or ankle. Simple fractures can be treated without surgery. Severe fractures or breaks may require surgery to heal properly. Either way, it is critical to have an evaluation by a specialist. Depending on your situation, our podiatrist will diagnose your foot fracture and recommend a custom treatment plan for you.

What Is a Metatarsal Fracture?

A metatarsal fracture is a break or crack that occurs in the long bones in the middle of the foot due to trauma. If the broken bones are not aligned properly after your injury, they will not heal correctly. This means that you can experience more foot problems down the road. It is critical to have any possible foot fractures examined and treated by a specialist to prevent future complications.

What Causes a Fracture?

Dropping a heavy object on the foot is a common way to break or fracture the bones in the foot. Other ways include intense or contact sports, poor form during exercise, falling down, or other trauma to the foot. If you’ve suffered an injury to your foot and experience pain, swelling, redness, and bruising, you may have broken a bone in your foot and should contact our podiatrist for an evaluation immediately.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Most foot fractures typically result from a sudden impact. A stress fracture is the outlier. A foot stress fracture in your foot can sneak up on you more slowly. The bones in your feet withstand significant force every day when you walk, run, or jump, and the cells in those bones continually work to repair and strengthen themselves to keep up with that strain. When your bones can’t keep up with your ongoing activity, however, they can develop cracks or bruises called stress fractures.

Stress fractures are most common in athletes and other people who perform repetitive movements that place strain on the feet. You may also be at higher risk for a stress fracture if you suffer from a bone-weakening condition such as osteoporosis.

Treatments for Fractures

Many fractures can be treated with a cast and R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, and elevation). Stay off the foot – a walking boot or crutches can relieve pressure, while icing and compression wraps can reduce swelling. Be sure to raise your foot above your heart, especially during the night, to speed up your recovery. Our podiatrist may also employ a cast or walking boot for you.

Surgery is used to realign the broken bones. Our doctor then inserts a screw to hold the bones together to allow them to heal properly. Recovery typically lasts anywhere between six to eight weeks. Our podiatrist will help determine which treatment option is best for you at your initial consultation.
