Get Relief From Chronic Ankle Pain

If you seek surgical relief from ankle pain or Achilles tendonitis pain, you’re in the right place! Achilles tendonitis is a condition that causes pain in your heel, ankle, and leg, and interferes with your daily activities, and makes it challenging to move around. Thankfully, our experts for Achilles tendonitis in New York City, NY, are here to help resolve this condition so you can live life pain-free.

What Causes Ankle Pain?

If you are experiencing pain in your heel or ankle, it may be due to Achilles tendonitis, an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the tendon that connects the calf to the heel bone. This condition usually develops after an increase in activity, exercise, or stress to your feet or legs. If left untreated, it can become chronic Achilles tendonitis. Additionally, there are other tendons in the foot that can become damaged and cause ankle pain.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis

Patients suffering from Achilles tendonitis or another tendon condition may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Pain & swelling in your calf, ankle, or heel
  • Decreased range of motion in your leg, ankle, or heel
  • Difficulty flexing
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Warmth or tenderness in your heel or foot

Tendon Surgery

Should conservative treatment options such as ice, rest, and compression not resolve your ankle or tendon pain within six months, surgery will be necessary to provide long-lasting pain relief. Some common procedures include:

  • Gastrocnemius (calf muscle) recession. During this procedure, our surgeon lengthens one of the calf muscles to improve the ankle’s motion and mobility. Gastrocnemius recession can be performed traditionally or with smaller incisions (a minimally invasive method) and with or without debridement (tissue removal).
  • Debridement & tendon transfer. Our surgeon will perform a tendon transfer if more than half the tendon is damaged to prevent rupture. The tendon that helps the big toe point downward is transferred to the heel bone to strengthen the Achilles tendon. The movement of the big toe is unchanged.
  • Debridement and repair. If less than half of the tendon is damaged, our surgeon can perform this procedure to remove only the damaged part of the Achilles tendon. After the damaged tissue is gone, the healthy tendon is repaired and stitched. For tendonitis caused by a bone spur, our surgeon will also remove the bone spur and possibly employ anchors to reconnect the Achilles tendon to the heel bone.

Our doctor will help determine which procedure best meets your unique needs and advise you on your treatment outcome.

Surgery Aftercare

After your surgery, our doctor will likely give you a boot or cast to wear for a certain period of time. Recovery time depends on the extent of damage to your tendon and the procedure performed — the more damaged the tendon, the longer it will take for you to heal and get back to your daily activities. Most patients undergo physical therapy and have great results at the end of their journey.
